Problem Statement

LA Fitness gym members forced to change their fitness routine due to COVID-19 restrictions, need to achieve their own fitness goals by performing their exercise programs while adhering to social distancing guidelines. LA Fitness’ video tutorials are not immersive and informative enough to fully satisfy their needs.

Design Hypothesis

I believe that by applying more interactive and immersive workout videos and tutorials as well as improving the overall UI of the mobile app, users will be more likely to use the app as a tool to achieve their fitness goals. I will know this to be true when the user spends more time using the platform (Session Time).

User Persona

Experience Overview (BEFORE)

  • The overall aesthetic of the app does not compare to the competitors of LA Fitness.

  • Even though the app is discoverable, there is poor visual design and text heavy menu options.

  • The videos lack important information regarding the expectations from the class and instructor. Some signifiers are not clear enough as to what their objective is.

UX RESEARCH

Business Research Results

Content

Competitive and comparable businesses are offering online content to members for a fee. In some instances, some content is free to everybody.

At Home Workouts

The content is much more organized and informative compared to the current LA Fitness app experience.

Proprietary Content

Unlike YouTube, the content in these apps is proprietary and it features personal trainers associated to the brand.

Competitive Analysis

User Interview Findings

Content

Free content is available online by services such as YouTube or other gyms offering classes to their members.

Guidance

Users need guidance from a trainer when working out.

Value

If users are paying for a gym membership and not going to the gym, they want to feel like they are getting something out of it.

Design Decisions

Experience Overview (AFTER)

  • Considered Material Design guidelines to make the overall visual design of the app more consistent.

  • The information cards are clean an minimalistic. Note the abundance of white space.

  • Categorized the workouts navigation, and included nutritional and instructor information.

  • Included a feature to filter and sort search results.

  • Enhanced the exercise information card and improved the overall visual aesthetic of the page.

  • The instructional video can be mirrored on a larger screen.

  • The membership card can be added to the Apple Wallet and it includes direct access to the member’s account from this screen.

Project Next Steps

Taxonomy

Complete CARD SORT exercise to refine the organization and arrange the plethora of exercises and programs to better direct the user.

Instructor Page

It was found during research discovery that the users want more information regarding the instructors’ background.

Fitness Devices

70% of users use an electronic device to track their fitness progress. It is imperative that the app integrates the use of devices such as Apple Watch or FitBit to enhance the experience of the user.

Club Information

As clubs reopen and restrictions are loosened or lifted throughout the nation, the app must improve the access to information regarding clubs and classes offered at the club.
